Gaffers' Cafe

Conte da Hunter!

Chelsea may have walloped Brighton & Hove Albion (4-0) in their last EPL match, but the gaffer, Antonio Conte is definitely not enjoying a candy-coated life. If anything, the Italian is a bag of nerves as we speak.

Conte has suddenly become a ‘hunter’! Yea, a hunter! More like a ‘fisher of men’! The Chelsea Manager is seriously in search of perhaps, the most important breed of footballers – strikers. Truth be told, Conte is at his wits’ end. So great is the Italian’s desperation that he’s willing to consider just anyone who has ever kicked a ball into the net (even if once in his career). Pity! His misery becomes more excruciating when he compares what he presently parades to the likes of Mohamed Salah, Harry Kane, Sergio Aguero and Jamie Vardy to mention just a few. Even the thought of a Raheem Sterling will make Conte want to dole out every pound sterling in the Chelsea purse to secure the services of just about any ‘potent’ player in the goal-scoring business.

Desperation, anguish, discomfort are some words that, perhaps, only Conte can best explain to anyone trying to grasp the English language. Little wonder names like Peter Crouch, Islam Slimani, Christian Benteke, Andy Caroll (no disrespect here) and a handful others have been bandied around since the January window opened.

But can one really feel pity for the Italian? If only he was a lover of music, he probably would have heard the lines… “don’t know what you got till it’s gone…” from one of Janet Jackson’s songs. He wanted Diego Costa flung off the Bridge and out of his sight. Now he’s doing the sigh! The Spaniard obliged and scrammed. In came another Spanish player – Alvaro Morata, who showed some early flashes but has somewhat fizzled out. His deputy Michy Batshuayi has been everything but worthy of the position too. Chelsea the biggest sufferer in all these.

Furthermore, the exit of Michael Emenalo (former Chelsea technical director) hasn’t helped their recruitment drive. The Nigerian obviously didn’t do a bad job while he reigned.

With the Champions league matches coming fast, Conte needs to resolve this serious issue. And just in case the Italian needs more names to add to his ‘wanted list’, let me humbly suggest Gianluca Vialli, Nicolas Anelka, Eidur Gudjohnsen, Tore Andre Flo. et al. Who says they can’t do the job!
